Today Google enabled a feature which allows you to send money between Gmail users. Make sure you’ve switched it off for your students.

The feature uses Google Wallet to allow a Gmail user to “attach” money to an email and send it to someone else. If you have Google Wallet enabled on your domain the feature is automatically available to your users. That’s not great if you’re dealing with students.

How to disable Gmail’s attach money feature

  1.  Login to the Google Apps Admin Console.
  2. Click Apps > Additional Google Services.
  3. Make sure Google Wallet is turned off for the Organisational Units you don’t want to have access.

You may need to change the service filter to get Wallet to show up:

Disabling Wallet doesn’t remove the Attach Money option from menu in Gmail, but it does make unusable. I’ve contacted Google to see if there is a way to get rid of it all together.
